Mercury in Defence

In psychological astrology Mercury represents the cognitive function in the natal chart. Mercury is the thinking process where a person makes sense of their ever changing environment. Mercury also represents different modes of communication and forms of travelling about however Mercury is symbolic of the thinking-survival system in personality.

Unfortunately there are some circumstances where the ability to think becomes tainted with other bodily experiences such as having feelings or when drugs and alcohol are mixed with Mercury. In other words the thinking process can easily go “out the window” on occasions. That sounds reasonable and nothing new in the scheme of personality function but what about when a person confuses themselves and works to limit Mercury’s cognitive ability to make sense of a situation?

confused-indecisive1Confuse Self? Why?

When there is a greater sensitivity to ones environment the thinking process tends to increase in order to seek out safety by understanding that environment. During times of stress and conflict it would seem to be a good idea if Mercury and our thinking process function at its optimum. As I have said that does not always occur in times of stress. Feelings have a way of emerging into personality while Mercury has less psychic energy to maintain a kind of cognitive defense to a situation.

Some people tend to use thinking as their coping style in contrast to experiencing appropriate feelings associated to a response. In other words the defense to having feelings is to think instead.

Feelings remain Underneath the surface while Thinking is the prominent process. Perhaps in extreme conditions in the personality the OCD person is predominantly using Mercury as a defense system to powerful underlying feelings. Much thinking is also known as the Thinking Racket. When Mercury and the thinking process are purposefully restricted in personality guess what happens? Lets look at some stress busting non thinking activities first.

  • Few glasses of red wine
  • A holiday away from work
  • Sex and intimate relations
  • Sleep
  • Other stimulants or drugs

I think we all agree its a good idea to shut the mind off to gain a sense of relief from the over use of Mercury occasionally. Its ok to tell yourself to stop thinking so much. For the OCD or ‘serial thinker’  my statement here might sound ridiculous. If a person uses Mercury in Defense there are bound to be some problems when feelings emerge.

For example; with Mercury and Mars anger is the predominant feeling underneath that may emerge when cognitive (Mercury) process has less psychic energy in the personality. When a person cannot make sense of their situation there is a loss of safety perceived and usually a predominant or default feeling emerges. The feelings of Sad, Anger or Scare will emerge into the persons experience. For the Chronic thinker, this feeling experience might be overwhelming and result with a panic attack.

The Mercury Moon person has a great ability to process feelings and thinking simultaneously. In other words they may be ok about experiencing feelings and also have the ability to reflect or make sense of the feelings. There is nothing to say that Feeling and Thinking cannot occur at the same time. Many people involved in anger management – practice identifying triggers to their anger and develop ways to think and be angry at the same time.

So what about the person who confuses themself?

confusionInstead of thinking the person invariably ends up confused about dealing with some matter. It is possible to be genuinely confused however the defensive pattern to “not think about it” or to “not feel it” is something else.  The person finds a degree of safety in becoming confused instead of believing in their own capacity to think. In this case the person is known to have a Confusion Racket . The process is out of their awareness to begin with.

Mercury retrograde,  Moon Neptune,   Mercury Neptune,   Mercury Mars,   Mercury Saturn and or Moon – Mercury – Saturn can be indicators of particular thinking or feeling styles in the natal chart. Mercury has the ability to survive in the psyche no matter what his condition might be. A person has the power to change their belief about Mercury’s ability to solve problems in life. The process may involve practicing to think less and to feel more. Alternatively, the affirmation that “I can work it out” and its ok to think and feel may be helpful to some.

If we cannot practice some kind of Mercurial ability to solve problems in life then someone else is going to come along to do that for us eventually. Why would a person wish for that?

Hey, good to hear from you Tony Grafitti. I am not sure one needs the OCD diagnosis to be a “serial thinker”. Perhaps we live in a predominantlty “thinking” society so there ar e bound to be some worn out heads and built up feelings.

    Yes kingsley,
I agree that w are thinking society.

I wonder what the psychological astrology would be for the feeling societies like the Greeks and the Italians.

Remember if you can make this Saturday that would be good but if you can’t that is fine

    cheers

I think all modalities of counselling need to allow for a cultural significance Grafitti. The counsellor or Astrologer needs to think and empathise like a Gereek or Italian. There are probably some things best not said to Italians or at least said differently in astrology.

    Hope to see you there

Lots of Mercury here…. Gemini at the Mid-Heaven; Virgo Rising; Sun Mercury Mars in Cancer conjunct; which then sextile my Moon Pluto conjunction in Virgo; Saturn in Taurus sextiles the water stuff, trines the Moon Pluto….

And then comes the Mercury square to Jupiter in Libra…

My first astrologer, years ago, told me i had a temper; i know now that may have been her response to my Mercury Mars in Cancer–

More than ever, i find that the individual placements don’t tell us that much. The richness lies in the aspects (for starters). For example, i had a chance to rent an apartment with a woman who had… oh i can’t remember where her Mercury was, just remembered that it had squares to Uranus, among others, and I saw this in person — temper flare-ups, “big mouth,” etc…. Unexpected anger (Mars must have been involved but even without Mars, this Cancerian found it alarming)

Or it’s that certain placements (say, mercury in sag) are equivalent to certain aspect patterns (merc square uranus). Not sure if i wholly believe in the example i just gave, but you get my point….

You can REALLY feel the difference. Have a conversation with someone who opposes your mercury vs someone who trines it…

Mercury sq Jupiter is an interesting combination A. Does that mean you think alot?

Its interesting to think of what aspects one might have between another person when the converstation starts up. Any two people will identify with each other quite differently, thats what I like about meeting new people regardless of the astrology. Perhaps I will look at the astrology if I get over curious.

Maybe it adds to crankiness/temper? (Mercury Mars squaring Jupiter)

And i do think a lot–

Switching topics: Kingsley, do you have any thoughts on Saturn Moon aspects… ? Natally or by transit?

  8. 8 kingsley November 27, 2008 at 19:19

Yes, just that they are not very pleasant transits. Natal aspects tend to show a person who is less expressive that others. The Saturn moon person might be shy or refrain from expressing emotions in a public way. That is going to be ok if you are a politician.

The transits can show an illness or perhaps a period of living with less than the usual fullness in life. Onerous and dutiful periods in life.
